Nowadays, with the development of digital technology, dental implant is not only performed by doctors, but also with the assistance of Navigation System. This technology is considered a breakthrough in dental implant. However, not many people know about navigation system, how does it work as well as its great benefits. Let's find out with us!

Doctor Vo Van Nhan - Director of Nhan Tam Dental Clinic, is the first Vietnamese doctor to apply navigation system in dental implant surgery for patients

Dental implant is considered an ideal solution for tooth loss cases, offering outstanding advantages over porcelain bridges or removable dentures. However, dental implant comes with a number of challenges since it requires high precision to avoid damaging important anatomical structures such as nerves, sinuses, blood vessels,...

These challenges are gradually being improved by the development of digital technology in dental implant, particularly, the present of navigation system, recently. This technology enables dental implant to be implemented with almost absolute precision, ensures safety for patients and minimizes treatment time.

Nhan Tam Dental Clinic is the first dental clinic in Vietnam to successfully apply Navigation system in dental implant. With a team of specialists who have over 20 years of experience and modern equipment, Nhan Tam Dental Clinic will surely bring you the perfect smile.

What is dental implant navigation system?

Dental implant is considered the ideal solution for tooth loss cases, ensuring the aesthetics, and restoring teeth function. However, this method requires high precision when performing the surgery to avoid touching important anatomical structures such as nerves, blood vessels, sinuses, eye sockets, etc.

For this reason, during the 50-year history of the dental implant, scientists are constantly searching and creating technologies to support the process of dental implant in order to bring the best results. In 2004, Dr. Nardy Casap, for the first time, introduced dental implant navigation systems and received very high appreciation from the experts. Over 16 years of improvement, today, dental implant navigation systems have been completed and widely applied in many developed countries.

Dental implant navigation system plays an important role in assisting doctors to carry out a precise, safe, aesthetic dental implant procedure. It also gives patients a comfortable, painless, less injured treatment, and minimizes treatment time.

Dental implant navigation system is the most advanced technology in dental implant today

How does dental implant navigation system work?

Dental implant navigation system integrate many modern technologies. It links with CT Cone Beam diagnostic imaging software and DTX Studio software, uses an integrated concept to diagnose, plan, and implement dental implants.

After taking CT Cone Beam 3D, image data will be transferred directly to the navigation system, allowing virtual treatment plans to be created for each case. Dental implant procedures can be carried out immediately without time wasted on constructing surgical guide stent.

Dental implant navigation system has two monitoring modes: visual monitoring and sound monitoring. Visual monitoring tracks the drill's activity when drilling into the bone through the camera on the system. Doctors will see the drill's coordinates, correlation of the drill with the patient's anatomical structure in real-time on the computer screen. Sound monitoring is an audible alarm that will activate when the drill goes further than the allowed length. These functions that only have on the navigation system will ensure safety and accuracy for patient’s dental treatments.

A tracker camera allows doctors to visualize in real-time implant sites, therefore ensure the absolute accuracy of the implant surgery.

Benefits of dental implant using Navigation System

The application of X-guide Navigation System in dental implant process will bring great benefits to patients, such as:

Absolutely accuracy

With a CCTV camera, the doctor will have a clear visualization of the surgical site, the drill’s operation is closely tracked, helping the implant process take place precisely from the position to angle and depth of the drill.

According to the research by Dr. Robert and partner, the accuracy of dental implant using navigation system is 11 times higher than that of the traditional implant (implant without supported devices). This result is published in the Journal of Oral Implantology (JOI) – a well-known scientific publication of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).

Ensuring safety

Dental implant navigation system offers absolute accuracy for dental implant, it not only controls the direction and position of the implant, eliminates the complications associated with the freehand method, but also avoids complications that damage anatomical structures like: nerves, blood vessels, sinuses, orbit, etc. Therefore, ensuring absolute safety for the patient.

Gentle and painless surgery

The application of the X-Guide Dynamic 3D dental implant navigation system will help the implant process to be gentle, painless, less injured, faster healing and reduce discomfort.

Quick treatment time

With the navigation system, after taking an X-ray, creating a treatment plan, the patient can have dental implant right away without waiting for the manufacturing of a surgical guide stent, which takes approximately 1 week. Thereby, the treatment time is shortened to 1 appointment instead of 2 to 3 appointments as before.

Flexible in choosing different implant types

With the traditional implant method, the doctor needs to design and construct a surgical guide stent according to the chosen implant type, if there are any changes, the whole process will have to start all over again. Meanwhile, the navigation system works for all types of implant, so the doctor can choose and change suitable implants during the surgery.

Durability and aesthetics

When the implant is in the ideal position, the teeth on the implant will easily achieve aesthetics and have a high bearing capacity, limit bone resorption, and ensure long-term durability.

Applying for particularly complex cases

X-guide dental implant navigation system is also considered the last solution for especially complicated cases, where the traditional dental implant is not applicable. For example:

  • Patients with maxillofacial cancer who had undergone maxillectomy (removing the upper jawbone segment), who need to place a long implant in the zygomatic bone – the surgery area is difficult to observe.
  • Patient with jawbone resorption, the thickness of the bone decrease, implant position is close to mandibular nerve;
  • Patients with limited mouth opening, implant in posterior teeth, etc.

In these cases, dental implant navigation system will be a powerful supporting tool, helping the doctor to implement the surgery accurately, bringing better results for patients.
