When the implant is secured to the jaw, it can be said that it would last for a lifetime. Because the structure and operation of the implanted teeth are similar to the structure and operation of the real teeth which creates stimulation force to the jaw bone that maintains the bone density needed to hold the implant.

What are dental implants?

Dental implant placement is one of the greatest scientific achievements in dental history, helping to restore lost teeth both in cosmetic and functional aspect. Implant overcome the inherent disadvantages of earlier restoration methods such as dentures or bridgeworks.

What makes dental implants feel completely comfortable and secure? Doctors use a titanium implant fixture that, over time, actually fuses to the living bone cells of the jaw. This union forms a strong and durable anchor for your new teeth, meaning there’s no slippage or other movement (which can sometimes happen with dentures). There are also no problems eating with dental implants, no need to repair them regularly and no more worrying about smiling freely and openly.

Dental implants typically have three parts:

  1. The implant: A screw that serves as a root for your new teeth. This is what permanently attaches to your jaw.
  2. The abutment: A permanent, but removable by your doctor, connector that supports and holds a tooth or set of teeth.
  3. The crown (or prosthetic tooth): This is the part of the tooth that you can see. It’s usually made of zirconium or porcelain for durability and good looks.

You can use dental implants to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or a full upper and/or lower set of teeth.

How do dental implants work?

First, your dentist will assess your dental condition, especially the teeth lost area through on-site examination and X-rays (preferably CT) to develop a treatment plan that works best for you. You will know where your implant is located, how many should be placed, require bone graft or not, treatment duration?

Normally, treatment consists of 3 stages:

  1. Placing the implant on the jawbone.
  2. Attaching the healing abutment (3-6 months after implant placement).
  3. Securing dental prosthetic on the implant (3 weeks after healing).

However, depending on the case of teeth loss, bone condition, gum at the teeth loss area, oral health, general health, and technical performance with treatment time can be shortened to just a few days or last 1-2 years.
