Wisdom teeth removal and its procedure

Author: Dr. Nhan Tam View: 860
Wisdom teeth removal is not a simple procedure in dentistry because of its complex position and structure, unlike other teeth. So, what is wisdom teeth and how to remove it safely, without complications?

What is wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the name given to the third molars. These will appear last in the entire jaw and only appear in adults.

Doctor Vo Van Nhan said: Adult has 32 teeth. The wisdom teeth will grow last and usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25, sometimes even later. Nowadays, people often have narrower jaws, with only 28 teeth. Therefore, if the molar is fully developed, there will be no space for wisdom teeth, which leads to its deflection.

Why should we remove wisdom teeth?

According to a survey conducted by the US Dental Care Foundation, about 85% of wisdom teeth will be removed instead of lasting for the rest of your life.

Wisdom teeth often grow in an inconvenient position or because the jaw was already tight. In addition, wisdom teeth are deep inside the jaw, which makes oral hygiene difficult, creating a favorable environment for bacteria to multiply, increasing the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, etc.

Deflected wisdom teeth cause discomfort

In some cases, the deflected wisdom teeth can cause infection to spread to surrounding areas such as the ears, cheeks, eyes, neck, etc, which can be dangerous to your life. Therefore, wisdom teeth removal is very necessary.

Does wisdom teeth removal difficult?

The difficulty of wisdom teeth removal depends on the position and shape of the teeth. Your doctor will tell you how difficult it is after taking an X-ray. Normally, wisdom teeth on the upper jaw are easier to remove than the lower jaw.

Wisdom teeth removal is difficult and complex because it can grow abnormally. If not grow toward the adjacent teeth, then it would grow back to the inside. Sometimes the wisdom teeth will grow lower than normal, only expose a small part from the gums. More complex is when the wisdom teeth grow close to the adjacent teeth’s roots and the nerve tube in the jaw bone. Then it will require deep surgery, but if performed at a reputable dental clinic will ensure no harm to the health of the patient.

If the wisdom teeth removal operation went smoothly, the wound would recover and heal very quickly. Usually, after the teeth extraction, you may experience some symptoms such as numb lips and gums. During the procedure, you will not experience any pain because of anesthesia. However, after the operation is complete, the anesthesia will dissipate. To speed up the healing process, patients should follow the doctor's instructions.

The process of wisdom teeth removal

1. Examination and prepare for defected wisdom tooth removal procedure

Before the surgery to remove defected wisdom teeth, the patient should be carefully examined and consulted. Your doctor will examine your overall dental health (cavities, tartar, gingivitis, etc.) and take x-rays of the entire jaw to check the position of the root to accurately estimate the direction, root location and the jaw bone around the wisdom teeth. If your teeth show signs of swelling or infection, your doctor will prescribe medicine to ensure the best condition for your dental health before the surgery.

X-rays of wisdom teeth will help the tooth removal operation proceed smoothly

In addition, the doctor also needs some basic statistics such as blood pressure, blood clotting rate, etc. Patients should inform the dentist of their health condition as those who suffered from heart or blood diseases should not remove wisdom teeth. Often, wisdom teeth removal operation will be performed in the morning - when the patient has the best health condition.

2. Performing wisdom teeth removal surgery according to the procedure

First, the patient will use specialize mouthwash to disinfect the mouth. After that, the doctor will numb the extraction area then perform the surgery with the help of dental equipment such as extracting pliers, gingival and ligament tools to create the best condition to extract your teeth.

Lastly, the doctor will sew the wound and let the patient bite a piece of cotton wool to stop the bleeding, ending the surgery. A week after wisdom teeth are removed, the sutures will be absorbed and the wound will gradually heal.

Wisdom teeth removal at Nhan Tam Dental Clinic

At Nhan Tam Dental Clinic, the wisdom teeth removal procedure is performed with a US-made Piezoelectric Bone Surgery Unit that is utilized for complex cases to ensure safe extraction. Highly flexible ultrasound cutter with the frequency of 28-36 kHz will neatly cut through the periodontal ligaments, separate the teeth from the surrounding elements and the alveolar bone. This allows teeth to be removed easily without overly penetrating the gums, thus causing no damage to the gums or nerves.

Nhan Tam Dental Clinic is also the dental clinic that owns the aseptic technology Extra AS, which provide absolute disinfection in all operations, ensuring safety when extracting teeth for patients.

Note after wisdom tooth removal

After performing wisdom tooth removal operation, the patient needs to bite a piece of cotton wool for about half an hour and then remove them. If it is still bleeding, you must bite another piece of cotton wool for another half an hour to make sure the bleeding stop.

Utilizing a cold pack is an indispensable part of the surgery, which helps to reduce pain and swelling. Within 3 - 4 hours after the operation of the wisdom tooth, place the cold pack on the newly operated area within 15 minutes, then put away for 15 minutes and then repeat.

You should note to avoid interaction on the operated area like touching it with sharp objects or tongue. Eat soft foods that are easy to swallow, do not eat tough foods to avoid damaging the area. After about 1 to 2 weeks, the roots of the removed wisdom teeth will gradually heal and you can eat/chew like normal. You can also be consulted on what to eat to be sure.
